Chapter Eleven

There was a small building about the size of a house just across the driveway from the church steps. It housed a small office, kitchen, and most importantly a meeting room that bridal parties could use as a place for last minute preparations. When she went in, she found Lani being primped over by the other bridesmaids, and Lisa busy taking pictures of Lani’s last moments as ‘a free woman’. A bottle of white wine had been opened but sat ignored on a table, surrounded by empty glasses. The atmosphere wasn’t nearly as dramatic as what she’d feared.

Lei-lei was there, positioned to ambush Maile when she came in. She gave her a hug.

“I’m never doing this again,” Lei-lei whispered.

“Sorry I’m late. Everything looked okay in the church. How’re things in here?”

“Only minor panic attacks and emotional mayhem,” Jenn, one of the bridesmaids said.

“I heard you found the kahili?” Lani asked Maile. “Where were they?”

“Long story. Basically, in storage. I just looked and they’re right where they belong behind the altar.”

“Everything’s ready,” Lisa said, now taking video on her phone. “Just need to take that long walk down the aisle.”

“Last chance to skip out, Lani!” Maile said, as Jenn went about the task of fixing her hair into a fancy twist.

“Yeah, any last minute doubts?” Lisa asked, laughing.

“About a hundred of them, just in the last five minutes!” Lani said. The finishing touch, the veil was draped over her face. “Just don’t let me near that door alone, or I might bolt!”

Maile’s updo was being lacquered in place with hair spray when there was a knock at the door. A man in a tuxedo looked in.

“Dad!” Lani shouted. “Come in!”

Mr. Fortuna had emotions written all over his face. Maile’s father had passed long before her own wedding, and she’d always wondered how he would’ve behaved in that moment. Her heart and her eyes were both close to bursting when she saw him.

“It looks like everyone is here now,” he said, looking at Maile. Jenn was stabbing tiny flowers into her stiff hair, using spray to glue them in place.

“We’re ready to go!” Lani said. “I’d give you a hug, but I can’t risk messing up this dress, or veil, or anything else.”

“You look wonderful, Daughter. I’ve never seen someone so beautiful.”

“Since Mom was your bride,” Lani said. Even with the heavy makeup, Maile could tell she was blushing.

“Is it time?” Lisa asked, still filming what was going on in the room.

“Not quite yet. I should have a talk with my daughter.”

“Uh oh! Last minute talk with Dad!” Lisa said, still aiming her phone at them.

“Hate to break it to you, Mister Fortuna, but Lani already knows what to expect on the honeymoon!” Jenn said. She gave Maile’s hair one last blast of spray.

The other bridesmaids hushed to silence. Maile could tell something more important was coming than a simple well wishes message from a father.

Mr. Fortuna poured five glasses of wine and handed them to each bridesmaid, keeping one in his hand for his daughter.
